McTimoney Chiropractors use a very gentle form of Chiropractic. The late John McTimoney developed the method and it has existed for over 50 years. In the UK one will find both McTimoney Therapists' and McTimoney Chiropractors'. This situation came about after Chiropractic became a regulated profession in 1994. Some therapists' did not wish to become registered Chiropractor's. This was in part due to politics within the profession. Chiropractic politics have always been a huge issue and still are.
Training to be a McTimoney Chiropractor has changed a lot over the years. Today, the course is at University Undergraduate Masters level. Training now takes between 4 and 6 years, depending on training modality and whether or not a foundation year needs to be completed. About a third of all UK Chiropractor's trained at the McTimoney Chiropractic College of Chiropractic. The General Chiropractic Council (GCC), regulates the UK's Chiropractic profession. One can only work as a Chiropractor if registered with the GCC in the UK. Chiropractors’ can also join the Royal College of Chiropractors (RCC).
McTimoney Chiropractors use a fast, gentle, precise and dextrous adjustive technique. McTimoney is popular in the UK, because it is gentle and tends not to produce 'cracking sounds'. Many people seem to think that all Chiropractors and techniques are the same, yet McTimoney is very different. McTimoney Chiropractic treatments also tend to cover the whole body from head to toe. The McTimoney neck adjustments are very gentle and very different to diversified Chiropractic. Diversified Chiropractic technique is probably the most dominant or best known technique in the UK and involves High Velocity Low Amplitude (HVLA) adjustments. Many Osteopaths and Physiotherapists tend to learn and use HVLA manipulative therapy techniques and these frequently produce the "cracking" type sounds. Terry has also trained in remedial massage and advanced soft tissue techniques. Many of these soft tissue techniques work very well with McTimoney Chiropractic. As McTimoney is so very gentle it is safe for people of all ages and many conditions. Terry has treated all ages from children to the elderly and to great effect. Some Chiropractors' have also undergone further training and treat babies (Paediatrics) or Animals. Terry has chosen not to treat babies, or animals and leaves these specialities to those with the additional training, interest and knowledge in the field. Instead, he is more interested in treating work and sports related musculoskeletal conditions.
